leatherleaf viburnum, Viburnum rhytidophyllum
Leatherleaf viburnum is an evergreen species, tolerant of shade. It has been imported from China for garden use in shady areas where the spring flowers and winter foliage can appeal. These days, other more colorful and fragrant viburnums are more frequently planted. This was an early frustration for me. When I first began collecting and identifying leaves as a Cub Scout, one of these was nearby. I never could figure it out. Decades later I saw a labelled one in a garden, and "Aha!". Strange what we remember. Leatherleaf can spread by suckers or fruit, and has been reported wild from IL, KY, and NY. Cultivated, Lenawee Co MI, 5/10/17. Moschatel family, Adoxaceae.
