This grass is apparently less of a weed than it used to be. It's native to north Africa and continental Europe. Annual vernal grass has been spread as a contaminant with seed for grain crops. Improved processing for grain is credited for reducing the numbers of this and other contaminants. But it still crops up (Aha, do we now know where that expression came from?) in AL, AR, CA, FL, IA, IL, KY, LA, MA, ME, MI, MN, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, WV, BC, and QC. Pendleton Co WV, 7/16/15. Grass family, Poaceae.
