nasturtium, Tropaeolum majus
Nasturtiums are world travelers. This one started in the Andes, and can now be found in salads around the world. The other nasturtium of our salads started in the Old World. Other? Water-cress is genus Nasturtium. Some people think the one shown here is just as tasty. But its aroma and flavor had me calling it nastyurtium when I first encountered it in Mom's garden. Tropaeolum majus is an annual vine that trails along the ground, or it may sprawl over slightly taller plants. It has been reported wild from CA, HI, MA, NH, PA, and VA. Matthaei Garden, UM, 3/22/12. Tropaeolaceae.
