On this day there was a lot of marsh bedstraw blooming on the Lake Michigan shore at Headlands Park. Headlands is a good place to get a quick initiation up north. And a pebbly beach like this may be marsh bedstraws favorite spot. In a couple of places you could walk through clouds of tiny flowers. Marsh bedstraw is considered a conservation concern in the southwestern limits of its American range, but a noxious weed in the northeast. It's natural range is from western Siberia west to Manitoba, and south as far as the Azores and Tennessee. It has immigrated as far as Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. With us it is in CT, IL, IN, MA, MD, ME, MI, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, VT, WA, WI(S), WV, LB, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, QC, YT, GL, and SPM. Emmet Co MI, 6/18/21. Madder family, Rubiaceae.
