pink azalea, Rhododendron periclymenoides

Pink azalea or pinxter is one of our more commonly cultivated species of azalea. It blooms a little earlier than others. Pinxter is derived from a Dutch word for Pentecost, which most often occurs in May. When I was in Pennsylvania this spring, this was the only azalea in bloom. Pink azalea grows in AL, CT, DE, GA, IL, KY, MA, MD, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, and WV. Jenkins Arboretum, Chester Co PA, 4/20/21. Heath family, Ericaceae.
