bluets, Houstonia caerulea

Bluets are also called Quaker ladies. Patches like this one are fascinatingly beautiful. The flowers are about one centimeter wide. They are distylous. Some plants will have flowers with pistils longer than stamens, others will be the other way around. This inhibits self pollination. Bluets grows in slightly damp spots in shade in AL, AR, CT, DE, GA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MO, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, NB, NS, ON, QC, and on SPM.
