smooth rattlebox, Crotalaria pallida

Crotalaria is not to be confused with Crotalus. They both rattle, but there the resemblance ends. Smooth rattlebox is much more our friend than those snakes. Throughout the warmer areas of the world it has been grown as green manure, and for food and medicine. The roots, flowers and seeds are consumed. Perhaps the best use is roasting and grinding the seeds for a coffee substitute. The plants contain chemicals that do produce reactions as medicine. Most of those are not much more than distractions from our ailments, but at least one of the alkaloids does have antitumor abilities. Smooth rattlebox grows in AL, FL, GA, HI, MS, NC, and SC. Polk Co FL, 10/20/15. Bean family, Fabaceae.
