silverhead, Blutaparon vermiculare
Silverhead is another world traveler, but this one started here. It's native to countries along the tropical Atlantic coasts of North and South America and Africa, and many islands between. It has now ventured as far from home as Japan. It grows in low damp areas and is comfortable with salt. It can form large sprawling patches on shores and mudflats, like this one near a Florida panhandle beach. There is one reference to its edibility, but so far I've seen nothing to help us know how to go about that. A tentative nibble of one of these succulent leaves would be interesting. With us silverhead is in FL, HI, LA, and TX. Wakulla Co FL, 7/8/18. Amaranth family, Amaranthaceae.
