narrowleaf plantain-lily, Hosta lancifolia

Hostas as wildflowers? Hosta is one of those long persistent plantings that leaves us wondering. If you see them you will often look around for signs that you're in an old garden. Or maybe a different kind of planting with a few tombstones? But Flora of North America and others accept them as a genus that has become wild, and narrowleaf is one of the most hardy and persistent. It certainly is in my garden. Every year they get gnawed to the ground, and every season they pop right back up. Narrowleaf plantain-lilies have been reported from CT, IL, MD, NJ, NY, OH, and PA. Cultivated, Lenawee Co MI, 9/1/14. Hosta family, Hostaceae.
