roundleaf ragwort, Packera obovata

Take a springtime walk through southern Michigan woods! You're likely to see patches of golden stars spread across the hills and valleys. These all pop up on stems around two feet tall, but they're not all the same. In the valleys you'll mostly see golden ragworts (Packera aurea). On the hills you'll see roundleaf. The clearest difference is that the basal leaves aren't completely round. Golden has indentations at the petiole that give them a heart shape. Roundleaf have at least some basal leaves with tissue continuing along the petiole. Roundleaf ragwort grows in AL, AR, CT, FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MO, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, VT, WV, ON, and QC. Lenawee Co MI, 5/14/11. Aster family, Asteraceae.
