Provence rose, Rosa centifolia

Provence rose is as likely to be called cabbage rose, but on this day we will use the more exotic name. It is sort of exotic, developed by horticulture from a complex mix of original species. Many references would add the 'x' for a hybrid, Rose x centifolia; or it is included in R. cinnamomea. Rose classification is complicated and uncertain. It is not unusual to encounter an apparently wild individual that defies the identification keys.
Provence rose is a traditional garden rose, appreciated for its aroma and as a source of rose oil. USDA says these roses are wild in CT, MI, MO, NJ, NY, OH, PA, WI, NB, ON, and PE. Ontonagon Co MI, 7/11/11. Rose family.
