Texas bluebonnet, Lupinus texensis

Texas bluebonnet is of course the state flower of Texas. Or not? It turns out that whatever species of bluebonnet of Texas you encounter, it's the state flower. This species does like to show off, forming large patches in any handy field. They are well known and much admired. As I drove southwest into the state I first encountered them near Houston. At that first spot they had drawn a crowd, with cars lined in along the road, their admiring drivers all holding up phones. One reference says Texas is the only state these grow in. Others tell us they're in FL, LA, OK, and TX. Harris Co TX, 4/16/22. Bean family, Fabaceae.
