red cedar, Juniperus virginiana

Just seems like a pretty remote way to do it? Ladies on one tree, guys on the other? But there's more than one way to be transported, and this one works for red cedar. So well that they're now considered invasive. Used to think they were kind of cool along I-80 in Nebraska, but they are not supposed to be there. Another bunch of pioneers. Really, red cedar is what is known as a pioneer species. When nature cleared a stretch of land, red cedar would be an early arrival, dropped in by birds that eat the berries. We may now think of it as invasive, but red cedar might have been received differently a couple of hundred years ago. It is a very useful tree, with durable dark-colored wood that is used in many specialized ways. Ever wonder where your pencils come from? Here you see the pistillate flowers. Red cedar grows in AL, AR, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, VT, WI, WV, ON, and QC. Lenawee Co MI, 4/9/21. Cypress family, Cupressaceae.
