palmleaf poppymallow, Callirhoe pedata
These poppymallow flowers are about two inches across, on stems a couple of feet tall. Some references mention a parsnip-like root that was food for indigenous people. But the tribes mentioned did not live in the range of this plant. There are nine species of Callirhoe, all native. They are not hard to confuse, unless you're looking for tubers that aren't always present. If this species has tubers, it may have been food for other tribes. Now palmleaf or finger poppymallow is sometimes grown in flower gardens, and has escaped in AL, GA, and IL. It is native to AR, OK, and TX. Hays Co TX, 4/17/22. Mallow family, Malvaceae.
