fowl mannagrass, Glyceria striata
Drop the last syllable from the common name and you'll have a better idea what we have here. Fowl manna is great wildlife food for anything that appreciates very small grain. Large grazers can take it all in a gulp, and small guys can move from one grain to the next very easily. For humans, we just have to remember that most anything that adds to our green world is good. That lack of a greater appreciation probably explains the lousy photography. The flowers are so tiny! The little white bits you barely see here are the pistils. Fowl mannagrass grows mostly in damp pertial shade in every state and province except HI, and on SPM. Lenawee Co MI, 6/7/12. Grass family, Poaceae.
