Bowman's root, Gillenia trifoliata

Bowman's root is also called American ipecac or Indian physic. It has much the same effects as ipecac, and has long been used as an emetic or laxative, and for a variety of other needs. An infusion of any or all parts of the plant will do. The roots may have been most used because they can be available in any season. Wiki says these flowers are pink, but I've only seen white. Bowman might have found these roots in AL, AR, DE, GA, IL, KY, MA, MD, MI, MO, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, WV, and ON. Beal Gardens, MSU, 5/28/12. Rose family, Rosaceae.
