coco plum, Chrysobalanus icaco

Coco plum has a purple plum-like fruit that is edible. It is native to the tropics of Africa and the Americas, and is part of the local diets wherever it grows. The kernel of the round seed is also edible, and is often dried and ground for spice. Coco plum has become invasive on some tropical islands outside its native range. There are two varieties. One is coastal and sprawls along the ground. The one shown grows more inland and more upright. With us coco plum only occurs in FL. Martin Co FL, 1/27/13. Coco plum family, Chrysobalanaceae.
