black horehound, Ballota nigra
The horehound name is oddly interesting. Black horehound if you go back to olde England was har hune, their words for fuzzy plant. Black har hune is not particularly fuzzy, but related plants are. This species is unpleasantly aromatic, kind of like mold. So of course it must have medicinal properties? Over time it has been used to treat just about every malady, to no proven effect. It's another of our Eurasian or perhaps originally eastern Mediterranean immigrants, and has settled in AL, CT, IA, IL, MA, MD, NE, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, WA, WI, and ON. Beal Gardens MSU, 7/25/15. Mint family, Lamiaceae.
