Circumstances sometimes prevent getting close for closeups.  On occasions when I don't want to wade into the water, or climb the trees, long (telephoto) lenses can save the day.  Of courrse, you still have to be within a reasonable distance.  For today's image, I still had to get down close to the muddy shore.  On this day, I wasn't prepared for wading.  Although I'm not shy about doing that.  These days my wife makes me wash my own clothes when I get back from outings.  Some of my jeans have permanent brown legs.
