Silver maple has separate male and female flowers.  The posted wildflower is male.  The one here female.  This maple is a large, fast growing, soft wood tree.  It was formerly often used in landscaping, as on my lot.  It is not as popular now because of its dense root systems, and because of its allegedly unattractive shape.  But I think mine are great trees.  Especially now that I've really seen them.  I am glad that I have a leaf blower for the gutters during helicopter season.  The Indians used the sap to make syrup, but it is not as popular as that from sugar maple.  The Mohegan used the bark from the south side of the tree to make cough medicine.
