Common trillium is white when it first opens.  As the flower ages it becomes pink, and as it fades it is close to red.  There are species that are pink to red throughout their flowering.  The size and shape helps tell common trillium from the others.  You may sometimes see plants with more petals, or green petals.  These are infected with an all too common mycoplasma.
