Here's a bunch of sharpleaf valerian.  The Navajo found a variety of medicinal applications for it.  There are three very similar species in the west.  They are sometimes combined into one species, Valeriana capitata.

We think of technical names as discreet from common names.  In fact they are often derived from common names in use at they time the scientific one was given.  Valerians are a good example.
