Thinking of the way gay wings delight us with their image made me feel like they are the visual expression of umami. Umami, our fifth kind of taste, was a word nominalized (a new word I learned looking this stuff up) from the Japanese word for delicious. These are delicious to see. On the other hand, they don't much remind me of glutamate.
Perhaps one reason I think of them as shy is that many of their flowers never open. Those flowers grow at the base of the stem, often underground, and are self fertilizing.
