If you enjoy wildflowers you have to enjoy their places. So here's a plug for a really good place. Watkins State Park offers a remarkable range of habitats. I first visited this spot around 1978, to see the autumn migration of water fowl. The lake is a local focal point for thousands of birds as they travel north and south. It is only very recently that I've come to appreciate the wildflower potential here. In addition to the lake habitat, there are upland woods and fields, streams, marshes, fens and bogs. A remarkable variety, requiring a remarkable variety of plants to populate them all. It's a good outing at bird time, or almost anytime.
