Here is the purple form of bristly thistle (another common name, well earned!).  Or pink.  Barb and I have had a decades long debate about what flowers are pink, and which purple.  Is this what they call boundary issues?  In any case, thistles make their own boundaries.  This species is listed as a noxious weed in Iowa and Arkansas.  I guess I can see the farmer's point of view.  The bristles of bristly thistle have even been used as the points on blow gun poison darts.  Indians also used the plant for medicine, and ate the pulp of the flower heads.
