Why so many names for empress of the dark forest? Because it is a much used plant by many cultures in the Rocky Mountains. The foliage is edible, and is said to taste like combinations of anise, parsley, cilantro, and celery, all plants of the same family. The root found many medicinal uses, and persists in commercial herbal remedies. All this made osha a very important plant in native culture.
A number of white flowered plants in this family have pink buds, Queen-Anne's-lace among them on occasion.
