So far we have seen only one plant of October ladies'-tresses in the Preserve. I went looking for more yesterday to no avail. But I did find a red mulberry. Big deal, huh! Actually, it is. The mulberries we so commonly see are aliens, brought to America from Asia in a failed attempt to start a silk industry. This red mulberry is our native species, and threatened in Michigan. I knew it had been seen in the preserve, but this was a first for me. So this and October ladies'-tresses are two more of the many things I owe to my Alma Mater.
