And he lived to tell the tale! I found waxy meadow-rue while looking for the bear that scared away the other hikers on Grand Island. In retrospect, it was a fortunate trade off. The bear might not have understood the telephoto concept.
This plant is also called skunk meadow-rue. When I looked up Indian uses for meadow-rue, the first one was incense or fragrance. Probably not this species. Meadow-rues in general were used medicinally, but also as love or hunting charms. Interesting pairing! The Iroquois used meadow-rue to 'make you crazy'. The hollow stems were used as toys.
