Canola is the third largest souce of vegetable oil. The leading grower is Canada, and they have vigorously promoted the name canola. They grew 15.5 million tons of canola seed in 2014. This species has had limited use historically. Originally, it contains chemicals that cause heart problems. Toxic oil syndrome, which can be fatal, has resulted from consumption of oil from unsafe plants. Horticulture has developed safe plants for our tables, and other plants to produce industrial oils. Now Monsanto has genetically modified canola to resist Roundup. Those plants potentially spread to the wild, and to your garden, and cannot be controlled with that common herbicide. So I guess there's little chance this complex and sometimes nasty beauty won't continue to adorn our fields and roadsides.
