Eurpean birch was used medicinally, mostly as a diuretic.  The wood is clear and hard, used primarily in furniture, plywood and wood turning.  A good glue can be extracted from it by heating the bark.  The sap is used like maple.  They also drink it fresh or make beer, particularly in Sweden.  Here this tree is often planted, prefered over our native birch because of its drooping twigs.
