Chives have a long history of human interaction, no doubt going back into pre-history.  An early mention of them comes from Marcus Martialis in 80 A. D., "He who bears chives on his breath, is safe from being kissed to death".  Maybe that's why I use green onions instead.  Or maybe it's just because that's in the market.  Apparently, green onions are more popular these days.  Chives are an attractive garden flower, but can also be an annoyingly persistent weed.
