Rose hips are edible and nutritious.  But as new moms quickly learn, that doesn't mean the kids are going to eat them.  The flesh is thin, not very tasty, and there's fuzz around the seeds.  And with swamp rose, they have those unappealing stalked glands, and grow in swamps.  I've nibbled on some rose hips, and it's hard to say why I still do.  I suppose if you're hungry enough, as the Indians too often were, they might be more appealing.  Even then they were mostly mashed up and used as ingredients in things such as pemmican.
