The late goldenrod just south of Ives Preserve is infected with an interesting gall.  It causes the flower heads to turn into small balls.  Opening them at the right stage reveals the red orange larvae of the goldenrod flower gall midge.  A big mouthful of a name for this small fly.

My campaign to honor goldenrod has fellow travelers.  Solidago gigantea is the state wildflower of Kentucky and Nebraska.
