We've previously looked at characteristics of plants that are most used for medicine.  State wildflower choices follow a similar path.  They are showy flowers, and therefore easily seen.  They are common and easily recognized.  They are easily found, more than a few in gardens.  They are perennial and therefore persistent.  They aren't marigolds.  Senator Everett Dirksen always advocated for marigold as our national flower.  So far, they haven't even qualified at the state level.  Wherever marigolds grow, you may not see them again next year.  Very unreliable.  Not material for emblems.  But you can attend the annual marigold festival in Everett's home town of Pekin IL.
