Blue Ridge carrion-flower
Here's an up close view of a staminate head of Blue Ridge carrion-flowers. Not to be confused with smooth carrion-flowers. Actually, in the past this species has been included in Smilax herbacea, the smooth carrion-flower. Under that name, you can discover that these frequently provided medicine for Indians and herbalists. Its roots were occasionally eaten. It would have been a shame to miss such a useful plant. Even if it does stink?
