Ives Fen Preserve, 1/12/11
This past Sunday was beautiful, as days go in Michigan in January. Couldn't stay in, so I headed for the fen. To me, Ives is THE fen. Here you have a view of a typical January day at the preserve, looking at part of the main fen. No flowers there, but a wonderland of stuff saved up for the coming season. Under that snow are sedges and grasses, goldenrods and orchids, and crayfish and rattlesnakes. But in January, you have to find a different frame of mind. The next days will be a look at this January at Ives. Very different than the one shown here. If one takes care to see, there is much to enjoy.
