Mystery from Ives Preserve

A little farther north on the fen path is a small patch of cat-tails.  The heads were beginning to break up to spread their seeds.  It looked like they were reacting to a good north wind.  But it was a windless day.  They were all coming apart on their south sides, here and at other places they grow.  Because it's their sunny side?  I have no idea, but it seems to be a great indicator of direction.  Much more consistent than north moss.
