Back into the winter fen
On the winter walk at Ives Fen I'm nearing the end of the shortcut through the woods. Up ahead I can hear cranes giggling. How great to hear the sandhill cranes at this time of year. A few have started wintering in southern Michigan. As I reach the fen , I hear them giggling behind me. Should have looked up! Oops, should have just looked. Before I pick myself up, I notice this oxeye seed head among the dried herbs. Those still on stems are grayed out and unappealing. This one still had more color. Maybe still not worth much notice, but then it's winter, and the cranes have flown.
