Last steps in a walk through Ives
That January 6th at Ives, when I neared the north end of fen, I decided to climb the bank rather than retrace my steps. When you do that, you really can end up IN the fen. The muckiest wettest part is the area at the base of the rise. You will be lucky to only end up ankle deep where the seeps and springs emerge. This day, I spotted a few bright green sedge sprouts, and, lo, right there with them was a skunk cabbage. It better be a tough skunk, because five days from now we are expecting a high temp of zero. But this spot, with its constant seep of water, will still not freeze solid.
