Here's a shot that better shows the dodder stem twining around its host.  Dodders  are despised by agriculture.  They greatly reduce production in fields they infest.  One result is that the Michigan law that protects rare plants explicitly excludes dodders.  There are several rare species here, all listed as special concern.  Some would be given threatened or endangered status and protected if they only could be nicer to us.
