Here are the 'kidneyleaves' of today's Silphium. Other species have more ordinary lance-shaped leaves, or great big more-than-a-foot long lance shaped leaves, or pinnately lobed leaves, or stem leaves in whorles or forming a cup around the stem. Wouldn't it be fun to collect them all in a garden? It would have to be somewhere south of here in Michigan, unfortunately.
