Here's a small black spruce. One of the main attractions at last Saturday's bog was black spruce. It rarely gets this far south in Michigan. If you travel the country anywhere south or west from here, you will not find it. Black spruce is a species that needs fire. Cones with viable seed stay on the trees up to 30 years waiting for a burn to clear space for seedlings. How then do we explain this new one in the bog. There have been no fires. Must have been a critter contribution?
