Alligator bites?

These are the female flowers of lancefleaf arrowhead. They're borne lower on the stem than the male flowers seen on the wildflower page. At this roadside photo spot, there were alligators in the background, basking in the sun. The Native American Ethnobotany site says this plant was used to treat alligator bites. Wonder how that worked?
