Barren strawberry, Geum fragarioides

It's always fun to take a close look at rose family flowers as the unfurl. The stamens in bud are packed together. As the flowers open, the stamens are unrolled. Here you can see some completely straight, and some still curled up in the center. This plant has long been called Waldsteinia. Recent research has shown that the first named species of the genus Waldsteinia is nested within Geum. It makes sense that this plant be called Geum gfragarioides. But most references, even recent ones, still use Waldsteinia. For now, we will go with the Waldsteins.
