The more light the better? Not necessarily. Direct light, pointed straight at your subject, reflects the most light back to your camera. Two problems. It's hard to get direct light to closeups because you're in the way. If the sun is behind you, you will cast a shadow on the subject. The other issue is that strong direct light washes out detail. That's particularly true with flowers, cleverly designed by nature to reflect a lot of light. This shot of a grass-of-Parnassus is a raw image that demonstrates that effect. These flowers have wonderful detail, but here it is impossible to fully appreciate it.
