Spring ephemerals

Search "spring ephemerals" and the first item tells us they're plants that bloom, fruit, and disappear in the spring, before the trees leaf out. That enables access to more sunlight. Then the next item gave ten examples of ephemerals, including hepatica, which we see here. Hepatica blooms very early, and is a very popular flower for wildflower enthusiasts after their long winter drought. But it turns out to be just about evergreen. In mild seasons or sheltered spots you can find hepatica leaves at just about any time. "Spring ephemeral" has become as ephemeral as linguistic precision. It now applies to just about all species that bloom before tree leaves appear. So the bottom line? Opportunity is ephemeral. You should be out the in the woods now!
