My rare plant excitement thing is really happening now! These winged monkeyflowers have only been found three times in Michigan; once in 1916, and twice in the last few years. One of those new times was here in Lenawee County. That parcel of land recently changed hands, and the new owner was hostile in the extreme when asked about going there. This year I've started checking other likely nearby habitats. Yesterday I spent some time visiting owners to make sure we have permission. Turns out one has already found the elusive monkey! As soon as she, people from Michigan Natural Features Inventory and I can schedule it, we will see the elusive monkeyflower. Wild petunias also grow in that area, which now may be their only location in Michigan.
