Sunday was an absolutely beautiful day! Had to get out! So I did a little bit of wandering at Ives Preserve. I took advantage of that time and place to puzzle over a couple of asters. Old field and lanceleaf look a lot alike, but now I've got their differences well set in my mind. Not that I need to. These days you can look up the identification keys right there on the spot. Anyway, I can say with confidence that this is old field aster, Symphyotrichum pilosum. They are prolifically in bloom in the uplands at Ives.
