Animals too!

(There was supposed to be an image of an Indian cobra here, but I can't get it to upload. I'll keep working on it.) Yesterday I saw a fascinating item about king cobras. Turns out the genome detectives are reclassifying animals too. They have finally been able to collect enough DNA from king cobras to enable their explorations. For some reason they've had a hard time getting enough samples? The king has a wide and somewhat disjunct distribution across south Asia. Variations in their appearance in different locations provoked curiosity that led to the new analysis. Turns out there are really four species of kings. The article noted that the lead scientist is one of the few people to survive a bite from one. Maybe that's a clue to why it was hard getting enough DNA. Think I'll stick to plants these days, but still found the whole thing interesting. And yes, that's an Indian cobra, not a king in the picture. Only cobra image I've got.
