Where would we be without cement? We wouldn't have gotten around as much. And we wouldn't have Cement City a little northwest of here. And we might not have Goose Creek Grasslands Preserve. The grasslands are just downstream from Little Goose and Goose Lakes. Those were the site of a large cement operation, and were either enlarged or created by digging for marl to make cement. That operation dug itself out of business long ago. Now we appreciate the natural potential of the marl based wet prairies in the area. Goose Creek flows from the lakes into the fen to the east. That fen became this preserve in the 1980s. A group of us did a walk around yesterday. This woodlily was a new and delightful discovery at least for me. We don't see very many of them around here.
